1930’s Historical Renovation
Whole House Remodel | Washington, D.C.
When the homeowner returned to her 1930s childhood home after relocating her parents to assisted living, she found a house filled with memories but in need of care. After years of wear, the outdated rooms and aging features made it clear that this well-loved home needed a full and thoughtful restoration. Seeking a design-build team capable of honoring the property’s historic character and restoring it to its original beauty, she turned to Kingston Design Remodeling.
Kitchen
The homeowner’s top priority was to update the old kitchen, which still had blue laminate countertops, linoleum flooring, and 1950s cabinetry. She also felt the space was far too cramped, offering little more than standing room.
Kingston opened up the kitchen by removing a wall and widening the entry to the dining room, creating a more spacious and welcoming layout. A classic black-and-white design featuring updated countertops, fresh white cabinetry, elegant tile, and modern appliances brought new life to the space while still honoring the home’s original charm.
Bathrooms
All three bathrooms had suffered decades of wear, with failing finishes and fixtures beyond repair. The client envisioned spaces that would feel fresh and welcoming, yet rooted in the home’s 1930s original historical style.
Kingston fully gutted the two full bathrooms and powder room, rebuilding each from the inside out. We replaced the aging tile walls with custom-crafted wainscoting designed specifically to complement the original architecture. In the powder room, carefully crafted wall paneling created a striking, tailored look. The result is a suite of bathrooms that feel both historically authentic and beautifully updated.
Laundry
Previously tucked behind an old bar in the basement, the washer and dryer lacked both practicality and comfort, which was far from the dedicated workspace the homeowner had hoped for.
We designed and built a bright, efficient laundry room complete with ample counter space, practical storage areas, and a crisp white aesthetic. The existing hardwood floors were carefully sanded and refinished, bringing warmth and continuity to the new space.
Exterior
Time had taken its toll on the home’s exterior, from weathered paint to overgrown landscaping. Kingston refreshed the exterior by improving the landscaping, replacing worn elements, and giving the home a fresh coat of paint. The exterior now feels welcoming again and beautifully matches the restored interior.
Conclusion
Kingston Design Remodeling delivered a full-scale transformation that exceeded the homeowner’s expectations, restoring a worn 1930’s residence into a thoughtfully modernized, warm and inviting space. Every detail, from handcrafted wainscoting to meticulously chosen finishes, reflects our commitment to honoring the home’s historical charm while creating spaces designed for today’s lifestyle. The homeowner was thrilled with the outcome, a home that feels comfortable and truly her own, with the perfect balance of historical character and modern luxury.
